Grand challenges - LES an Earth Simulator

Scores of scientists around the world have come together to build an earth simulator to study patterns occurring in the earth such as weather, diseases etc. In one another step towards understanding ourselves from the science and that has been developed so far, it sounds exciting and inciting. Why we need grand challenges? Its not just to reach the goal, which is  usually grand in itself and might not be easily reachable. Grand challenges are hard to met, be it exploration of the moon which was one among the successful challenges or be it a treatment of cancer, which is still as elusive as it used to be years before. However, narrowing down search and study for such challenges in fact opens up vast knowledge in different directions enriching us with new techniques and technologies possibly to make human living better. LES is thus an interesting program and should create opportunity capture our planet's behaviorism in useful depth. To read more click here

Extreme weather hits South Korea yet again

Yet again Korea is hit hard by extreme rainfall, and this time it was even bigger. Last year. Sept. 21 2010, Seoul experienced 150mm rain which was enough to cripple road and subway system. Today, July 27 2011, more than 400mm rain not only crippled the transportation, but also took more than 38 human lives, destroyed apartments and condos and washed away cars. My condolence to the families who lost their beloved ones, hope they find strength and courage in this difficult situation.

The sign however of weather becoming more and more extreme signals the definite change of our environment. Seeing the lives being taken away like this in one more the worlds better economy makes me feel pain to see how people would manage in poorer countries if any of these things happen.

Facts on Mahatma Gandhi's assination

I have come across many people who believe that Mahatma Gandhi should be blamed for partition of India. This article in the link reflects the fact on why such allegations are not only baseless and venomous but against the spirit of person who stood for humanity and truth.

at sijang

An old woman puts two packets of noodles on the counter. The barcode reader scans and the price is 800won. She gives everything she had in her hand to the sales girl. "Its 300 won short", says the girl. Woman  is embarrassed but she had no more to offer. She pleadingly asks if she can check her history points to cover the cost. Sales girl misunderstands and starts explaining at length on why she can't take two packets of noodles on that price. At that moment she completely fails to understand that the those two packets were her real need. My heart broke when the old woman gave up on one. For once I wished for some discount for hunger.

My prayers for Japan and the Japense people

Touted as a biggest ever disaster after second world war for Japan, 9.0 moment magnitude scale earthquake invoked tsunami is among the saddest natural disaster witnessed in on 2011 March 11 2:46 PM local time. It didn't take long to sweep away entire village of the long lashing waves leaving just a few survivors and the huge lump of debris to be cleaned up. It was sad to see so many people lost their lives and even more painful to see the survivors who just lost their loved ones and looking them in the debris of cars, ships and fallen houses. Picture rather seen only on the movies were for real and in front of our eyes. To add the trauma, followed the fear of potential nuclear disaster at fukushima nuclear power plant. While the devastation at the harbors halted the import for food and gasoline, nuclear plant disaster looked even more dangerous.

Even at the time when every one in the country was in distress, it is wonderful to see how civilized and patient are the people of Japan. Its for the world to see and learn from their inner strength to be jelled together and be support of each other and hold a fighting spirit deep in their hearts of coming back. My prayers are for the people in Japan and hope they stand back to normal as soon as possible.

With Ubuntu 10.10 it was a worthless try to install itunes for windows. Starting itunes with wine support was just possible but without any functional success. Check out this page that goes through simple set of instruction to add drivers for your ipod and sync using rythmbox or any package in your ubuntu installation. Of course it is not possible to connect to istore, but rest of the features can be easily explored.

Dasain 2010 in Korea

Our favorite festival Dashain!! Venue for nawami celebration was Suwon’s Park. The weather became chilly quite fast and we shifted again to Bhinaju's home. Delicacies were Bhinaju's khasi ko maasu (lamb meat), Dambar dai's duck meat, Dharane baini's aalu dum, Sunita's selroti and Manju's achar etc.

Tika day was yet special, all due to Parag's mom. She prepared tika and jamara, which almost felt like being at home. Added with wonderful lunch at his place was again special!!.

4 days in Tokyo

Ask me the first and last impression of Tokyo, Japan. "EXPENSIVE". The world biggest metropolis is also the worlds' most expensive. Direct nepali translation of Tokyo is 'to bite'. It bites as if you are soft bread and might just engulf you with a burp. We spent just four days, me my wife and my daughter.

It was a run for visa to Tokyo. It is not much of a hassle and will be done in three business days after getting a visa number from the Immigration office of Korea. Finding a Korean consulate is not an easy job since official embassy website does not have proper location information in English. Anyone looking for this information should refer to Intrepid information here in this link

And that’s why I went to Japan. To make a new visa, a useless exercise enforced on me. This was our first family trip together in other foreign country beside Korea. My wife was quite excited, my daughter had a least idea of what was going on and I just wanted my job to be done at the earliest.

We took a Weekly Manison hotel, nearby Akasaka station, probably the cheapest around that area. There are other schemes if you want it for a week. Do not expect any free services except towel cleaning. Dirty towels must be returned to the counter for the service by you. People are kind, speaks good English but you might hardly like them thinking about the amount you are paying. Still, they are nice staffs, who will ask 150 Yen if you want to rent a plastic umbrella that you can buy in around 2-400 Yen in stores few minutes from the hotel. 10 Yen for making a photocopy of a piece of paper. A coin phone in the lobby is hardly successful.

From Narita airport on 25th of September, we took a rail, limited express to the downtown Tokyo where our hotel was located. Rail is the cheap, best, and only recommended transport medium, unless you are in emergency. Tokyo subway system is cool and easy to travel around. It might initially look complicated with lots of lines and naming conventions, but you will get used to it in no time. There are instructions and notices in English. Every station you might have to do fair adjustment depending upon how long you are travelling.  Tokyo metro guide is in the link and it is the best.

Odaiba city is a lovely place. We would not have visited there, had we not met Nami's friend. Thanks to Sunil and Dilip, who were kind enough to spare entire day and choosing a right place to get a real good feel of the city. Rainbow bridge and the science building and the Tokyo bay, all at the same place was amazing, added with the Mexican festival. Beautiful landscape of the city from any point around had a breath taking view gelled well with mexican food and corona beer.
Next day we visited Akihabara electronic market. Nami finally got her dreams fulfilled to own cannon in relatively cheaper price. Next was a visit to Tokyo Tower, a visit by chance since it was close to the Korean consulate. The best thing I remember was visiting wax museum with descriptive history about electric guitar. Rest it was nothing but the views of the city around Roponggi hills (a downtown to Tokyo), imperial palace and the Odaiba city.

Finally at the end, Nanu was happy to be back again in Korea.

Extreme Weathers

This year we witnessed three extreme weather situations.

1. Extremely heavy snowfall on January 10th 2010. The recorded fall had dumped more than 10 inches of snow, including the cold blizzard, enforcing roads ands school to be closed. Myself, I was inside 3007 bus, travelling from Suwon to Seoul. The usual journey of about 50 minutes took almost about 5 hours before I finally reached office at the lunch hour.

2. Kompasu Typhoon hit Gyonnggi province early this month on Sept 02, 2010, started around 4:00AM in the morning with the wind speed between 172 to 200 km/hour. I woke up early when it started and saw its aggression against the feeble branches of the trees near my apartment. They stood the ground and so did the windows, however took three lives in South Korea and more than a dozen in northern side.

3. Heavy Rainfall today on Sept 21, 2010 started around 3:30 PM when we were travelling to Seoul National University from Suwon. Thundery shower had precipitation about 150mm/hour and lasted for more than an hour crippling subways and roads in Seoul. It was amazing to see the water drainage system being flooded and filling in roads and houses. Thankfully the bus service was good enough to reach us to SNU quarter safely.
